Introduction

Great Food, Egyptian Style

It is no longer necessary to visit Egypt, land of the pharaohs to enjoy the tastes of the Nile. Great Egyptian food has now arrived in Britain.

Egyptian cuisine is very tasty and nutritious. Dishes are based on good quality ingredients that are delicately spiced and enhanced by the use of lots of fresh herbs. Vegetables play a major role in the Egyptian kitchen and appear in many of the wonderful tomb paintings that have survived as a pictorial record of the lives of the pharaohs and the people of ancient Egypt.

Although there are no recipe books remaining, we have clear evidence of the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, fowl, and fish cooked and enjoyed by the ancients; from the amazing tomb paintings that are there in glorious colour to the writings of ancient travellers and scholars such as the Greek Herodotus.

For thousands of years the river Nile has been the source of great bounty for the inhabitants of the great country of Egypt; its rich, silt laden waters of the never failing annual floods, creating some of the most fertile soil in the world.

Beans were a very important staple of the Egyptian diet and indeed still form the basis of two of Egypt's most loved national dishes:

Foul and Ta'amia are the traditional Egyptian breakfast enjoyed by millions of Egyptians everyday. Foul is a delicious puree of fava beans flavoured with lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, cumin and fresh herbs. Something that gives me great delight is to see the face of somebody who tries foul for the first time and is astonished by the wonderful symphony of flavours that accompanies every mouthful. Scooped up with pieces of warm pitta bread, foul is not only the perfect breakfast but a tasty, satisfying meal that will keep you feeling full all day long. Ta'amia is the original falafel. Made with broad beans, spices and lots of fresh herbs, Egyptian falafel is a delicious healthy snack to be enjoyed at anytime of the day. Eaten on its own or broken into a delicious salad with chopped tomatoes and parsley, our ta'amia makes the ideal vegetarian snack - fragrant and delicious with a certain 'come back' factor that is irresistible.

About Us

Great Food - Egyptian Style
Taste of the Nile was created to fill a niche.

We began our catering service by providing delicious, fresh, tasty Egyptian food at outdoor events and festivals. We pride ourselves in the quality of our food and strive at all times to exceed expectations. We are now used to hearing from customers that our food is the best on offer and how fantastic it is to find fresh, quality food at an outdoor event. In fact, it is a challenge that we have taken in our stride and overcome to produce restaurant quality food from a basic outdoor stall kitchen. You can be sure that we always provide first class service and food of exceptional quality. We do not try to compete with the high volume burger units, but offer a more genteel experience and excellent food. So if it is great quality food and thoughtful service that you require, please contact us.

We are happy to attend:
Outdoor events of one day or longer
Markets
Special promotional events
Corporate functions
Private parties
Childrens' parties
Buffets
Picnics
The range of food that we offer from the stall at outdoor events is mainly vegetarian with the exception of one token meat dishes if needed to satisfy the carnivours.  Typically we will serve either delicious Beef Kufta meatballs in tomato sauce made with ground beef and fresh herbs or very tasty and delicatly spiced marinated breast of chicke.  Both the chicken and kufta is gluten, egg and dairy free.

We are equally happy to provide exclusively vegan or vegetarian food.

Our food really is delicious. We are the first and only event caterers to offer falafel made in the traditional way; not with onion and chick peas that is so common these days, or frozen, but freshly made to a secret recipe based on the ancient recipe from the time of the pharaohs. Our refrigerated salad bar is stocked with salads chopped and dressed throughout the day. The Kufta meatballs are made without fillers or egg, just ground beef, herbs and a delicate balance of spices.

On colder days, we have a delicious, fragrant lentil soup and also a fantastic selection of in-house cakes and pastries soaked in a lemon and rose water syrup served with delicious mint or clove tea.

Although we specialise in Egyptian cuisine, we just love to cook and are happy to create a bespoke menu. We have great expertise and are able to provide authentic Caribbean, European, Italian, Thai, Indian and English dishes.

Whether you need us to cater for a party of 50 at home or a reception of 200, whether you have a party of children or adults, we can provide you with what you need and more.

Elaine El-Essawy catered for my sixtieth birthday party in a field in Norfolk a couple of summers ago. There were over 200 guests and conditions
weren't ideal for mass catering but she did the most amazing job - not only did she rustle up truly delicious food, but she did it with grace, good humour and extraordinary efficiency and speed - she seemed to magic the food out of nowhere. In fact she was the hit of the evening. And it was all very modestly priced. I would recommend her wholeheartedly.

“We were overjoyed to have your ‘Taste of the Nile ’ stall at our folk festival Folk By The Oak. Your selection of freshly prepared, mouth watering Egyptian food was the most popular stall on site with people lured in by the delicious fragrant smells. It’s so good to see authentic food prepared with love and served with pride. Our audience couldn’t stop talking about the falafels!! Please come again. Caroline x x “

"I just wanted to say again how much we enjoyed your food. I've had no end of compliments on the catering and the party was a great success in no small part due to your efforts in the kitchen!

I hope we'll have the chance to use your culinary skills again at some point in the future. I will certainly be recommending you to anyone who needs a caterer!"

"Many thanks for all your hard work on the night of the ball - your Egyptian food looked beautiful and was absolutely delicious!"
